VERSE: I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as your possession. GENESIS 15:7

What would you do if God told you to go out of business?

I don't know about you, but that's a question I've never thought about. But it's one that a man named Abraham had to consider when God told him to close his doors and hold a going-out-of-business sale.

Abraham was a successful businessman. He had been blessed by God with a thriving business, and he had even been told by God that he would be the father of many nations (Genesis 17:5). So when God told him to close up shop and go out of business, it seemed like bad advice.

That's exactly what his wife thought when Abraham told her what God had said. She loved Abraham deeply, but she wasn't so sure about this plan—and neither was Abraham himself!

But God doesn't give bad advice. And sometimes His voice can't be so easily dismissed as a misunderstanding or mishearing or something else that could be solved simply by talking things through with your spouse (or anyone else). This word was clear: "Go out of business."

It's easy to second-guess God when things don't go as planned.

After a year of doubting God and wondering if He had misled this couple, they finally saw how the Lord began to provide new opportunities. The career change ended up being one of the best things that ever happened to them. They have prospered ever since. But it wasn’t easy at first.

Following God rarely is. It takes time to see the fruits of obedience.

There’s a common theme in Scripture, and it’s one that has been repeated throughout the ages. God calls us to leave home and go to a land He will show us later.

Abraham had plenty of opportunities to second-guess his decision to follow God—his wife was even captured at one point—but he eventually saw that following always proved to be the right thing to do. That’s what life is like when you believe God speaks.

He leads in ways that, on the surface, don’t always make sense.

He's got a plan for us, and we'll find out what it is in due time. All we have to do is listen.

Lord, if You will speak to me clearly, I’ll go in any direction You tell me, regardless of what other people think about it or how much sense it makes to me at the time. My steps belong to You.
