VERSE: You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. PSALM 139:5

The pastor was on his way to visit a church member who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. He was praying for the man and for his family when he heard it in his spirit: “The evil one cannot touch you.”

He knew that this statement was not just for him, but also for the man he was going to see. He also knew that this phrase would be an encouragement to them both when they needed it most.

That morning, he had prepared himself by reading scripture and praying. So when he heard this message, he knew that God had given it specifically to him and to this man at this time—to prepare them both for the difficult day ahead. It wasn't until later that day when the attacks came that he understood why God had given him this assurance: so that he could remain calm and trust God when things got tough.

When you're going through something hard, it can be easy to feel like the world is crumbling around you. We have no idea what's coming next, and we're convinced that our lives are taking a turn for the worst.

But if we remember to remain calm and trust God, we'll realize that He already knows what's coming—and He prepared us for it! The messages we receive from Him don't make sense at first because we have no context for them. But in retrospect, they are very reassuring. If we had heard Him afterward, we would wonder if we heard only what we wanted to hear. But when He tells us ahead of time, we know it isn't a figment of our imagination. That may not change the situation, but it can certainly change our response to it. Only God can give us assurance before we need it because only He knows what's going to happen.

Sometimes, we can't see the big picture. Sometimes, it feels like we're lost and alone. But I want you to know that you're not.

As you go through life, remember this: there's a reason why God has placed you where you are right now. He has a plan for your future that is bigger than anything you could ever imagine—and He's got your back every step of the way.

So make it a habit to listen in the morning for whatever verses God gives you and whatever impressions He whispers into your spirit. Write them down. They may seem random at the time, but if you review them at the end of the day, you may find a correlation between what He said and what you experienced. Not only will this encourage you in times of need, but it will also confirm that you are hearing God’s voice —and that He goes before you to bless you.

Holy Spirit, speak to me in the morning about the journey ahead. Prepare me for each day. Let me experience the comfort of knowing that You are already watching over my future.
