VERSE: Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets. AMOS 3:7, NIV

Ask the average person what a prophet does, and most will boil it down to predicting the future. A prophet is often perceived as the Judeo-Christian version of a clairvoyant, a seer who peers into the plan of God and perfectly describes how it will unfold. Somehow we got the impression that prophecy—hearing God’s voice and declaring it—is entirely future-oriented.

But this is not true. Prophets also speak in the present tense. We can find evidence of this in Jesus' own ministry: "Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it" (Luke 11:28). In other words, obedience is part of hearing from God today. And when we do hear from God today and obey His instruction, we are fulfilling our calling as prophets.

The plans of God are better than our own.

But the problem is, we don’t always know what those plans are. We can get so caught up in our own little worlds that we don’t even know how to follow God’s plan for our lives.

So how do we know when God is speaking to us? How do we go about listening to Him?

Well, here’s one thing we need to remember: prophecy can be about the future, of course, but the point of hearing God’s voice is not simply to figure out what’s going to happen down the road. It’s to get God’s perspective—whether on the past, the present, or the future.

He reveals His thoughts about us, His interpretation of events and circumstances, the purposes He is working out, and His greatest desires for our lives. He portrays life in its true light—a vital point of view when we get stuck in dark places. When He speaks to His servants (prophets) according to the New Testament (Hebrews 1:1-2), He reveals not only His plans but also His heart. And His prophets (any believers who will listen)

It's easy to get caught up in the moment. When we're in a tough situation, it's difficult to know that God has a plan for us.

But when we remember that He is perfect and that His perspective is always available to us, we can have confidence that He will show us how to handle our circumstances appropriately.

When we hear God, it's because He wants to speak to us.

It's not an accident or a surprise; it's a carefully designed plan.

He doesn't make decisions without us, or carry them out without our participation.

He makes us partners in His plans for humanity.

Lord, involve me in what You’re doing. Reveal Your purposes to me. Help me to see from Your perspective, think Your thoughts, and walk in Your ways.
