VERSE: The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The LORD thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. . . . In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!” PSALM 29:3-4, 9

We’ve all been there.

We’ve all heard the voice of God, and we know it when we hear it. It’s loud and clear as a lightning bolt in our souls. But sometimes, it can be hard to recognize what we’re hearing.

The more you grow accustomed to God’s voice, the louder it sounds. What used to be a faint whisper—and dare we even follow such a subtle and tenuous word?—is now a lightning bolt in our souls. “The voice of God,” said Ignatius of Loyola, “having once penetrated the heart, becomes strong as the tempest and loud as the thunder.” Our sensitivities have increased, even though we think we’re still as hard of hearing as ever. How could we not heed what we’re hearing? It’s God! We recognize the sound.

I can't tell you how many times I've been walking down the street, and all of a sudden, I just feel like God's voice is speaking to me. It's almost like He's tapping me on the shoulder and saying, "Hey, listen up."

But sometimes I just don't know whether it was really Him or not. Maybe it's just something deep inside my own heart that I'm mistaking for Him?

So then what do I do? Do I ignore it? Do I run away from it? Or do I listen?

That's the thing: when you know in your heart that something is God talking to you, there's no escaping the implications. You can't just ignore it or pretend it didn't happen—you have to respond or else rebel in disobedience. The more we learn to recognize His voice, the less room there is for doubt or confusion about what He wants from us. Something in us compels us to align ourselves with His perspective, and we sense this connection with His Spirit and cannot ignore it.

The pursuit of God is a difficult thing. It's easy to get distracted by the world, and it's easy to forget that He is there. But when we do hear His voice, we can't help but shout "Glory!"

It's not that we wouldn't ignore Him anyway; it's just that sometimes He asks hard things of us, and it's much better than not hearing Him at all. Other people may be satisfied with a casual or distant relationship with God, but we asked at the beginning to know Him at all costs. When a heart loves the Lord deeply, it can't be content with long silences or unexplained gaps. We have to pursue Him until His voice resonates within us again. That's what we were designed for!

Lord, it often seems that I’ve made no progress at all. Yet when I recognize Your whispers within me, they sound more compelling than ever. Echo them loudly and clearly. Let me not escape them. Deep in my spirit, turn up the volume of Your words.
